Joey Loos

My work is an exploration of psychological narratives that capture fragments and recreate moments of memories. My paintings present an intimate expression of recollection and fluidity. My work is punctuated with sharp imagery and abstracted elements that stand vividly against an unsolidified background. To create tension with a sense of contiguity, layers of mark making are juxtaposed against atmospheric smudges of oil paint and mixed media. The use of selective color and representational imagery suggests how the mind retains specific details vividly while others remain bleak or disappear into abstraction. My work discovers an internal world unobstructed by structure that conveys an underlying sense of anxiety and uncertainty.

My work is largely based on memories that have been passed down to me and remembrances that have been personally constructed. Although largely non representational, my work follows a distinctive approach within contemporary figurative painting rooted in the tradition of narrative art. I work within a collage-like process using ancestral fabric, photographs, oil paint, and various other materials.
